Cryptocurrency is best understood as a recordkeeping system with rules for issuing, transferring and validating units on a distributed ledger.

The ledger is the shared record

A blockchain groups validated state changes into ordered records. Participants use the same protocol rules to determine which updates are accepted and how competing histories are resolved.

Ownership is expressed through control

Most networks recognize control through cryptographic signatures. A valid signature authorizes a state change without publishing the private key used to create it.

Networks differ in important ways

Consensus design, validator structure, issuance rules, governance, transaction capacity and upgrade processes vary widely. The word cryptocurrency therefore describes a broad category rather than one uniform system.
